Dan's desire to work with teachers more effectively as a building principal during the evaluation process led him to search for ways to integrate research based standards of teacher performance and research on adult motivation to learn. Dan piloted a process that incorporated self-assessment, the use of multiple data sources, and accountability process for teachers needing improvement. Corwin Press published Evaluating Teachers for Professional Growth in 2000.
